ATHENS, Ga. The No. 7 Virginia women’s soccer team remained unbeaten on the season, topping Georgia 1-0 in its first road game of the season. The Cavaliers used a second half goal by Kelly Quinn (Dublin, Ohio) to down the No. 22 Bulldogs and improve to 4-0-0 on the year.

“This is a good result on the road against a ranked team,” said head coach Steve Swanson. “I thought we played well overall. Could we have been better? Yes. Could we have finished better? Yes. But anytime you get a result on the road against a team of this caliber, you take it.”

In the first half, the Cavaliers dominated play but couldn’t turn that field position advantage into one on the scoreboard. Virginia outshot Georgia 10-2 before the half and had a 9-2 corner kick edge, but the closest the Cavaliers came was in the 24th minute when Sinead Farrelly’s (Havertown, Pa.) blast from outside the area rattled the crossbar.

Virginia took the lead in the 69th minute as they took advantage of their 12th corner kick of the evening. Caitlin Miskel (Boca Raton, Fla.) sent the ball to the near post, where Quinn flicked a header past the keeper and in for her third goal of the game.

“We were knocking on the door for a while on set pieces before we got one in,” said Swanson. “It was nice to finally put one in. We created a lot of chances tonight, which is a positive. We just need to do a better job of capitalizing on them.”

Overall the Cavaliers outshot the Bulldogs 24-4 and had a 14-4 corner kick advantage. Celeste Miles (Garland, Texas) made one save to record her fourth shutout of the season, while Michelle Betos made 10 saves for Georgia.

With the win, the Cavaliers open the season with a 4-0-0 record for the first time since the 2004 season. That year was also the last time that Virginia had four shutouts to start the year.

The Cavaliers conclude play at the Georgia Nike Invitational on Sunday when play Auburn at 11 a.m. at the UGA Soccer Stadium. Auburn fell to No. 6 Stanford 3-0 in the first game of the tournament on Friday.
