CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia volleyball team opens its season at home this weekend, playing host to the annual Marriott Jefferson Cup. Appalachian State, Binghamton and Virginia Commonwealth will all visit Memorial Gymnasium for the two-day tournament.

Play will kickoff at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, with the Cavaliers taking the court for the first time at 7 p.m., vs. Virginia Commonwealth.

The Rams enter the tournament with a 3-3 record. Virginia holds an 18-12 advantage in the all-time record between the two schools. The last time the two programs met was in the 2004, when Virginia cruised to a 3-0 victory over VCU, extending its win streak to 13 consecutive matches over its in-state rival.

The Cavaliers will open play on Saturday against Binghamton, at 1 p.m. The contest will mark the first-ever meeting between the two schools on the volleyball court. The Bearcats (3-4) are the fifth opponent this season that the Cavaliers are facing for the first time.

Since returning to a renovated Memorial Gymnasium in 2003, the Cavaliers have posted an overall record of 13-2 in the Jefferson Cup, and won three of the past five tournament titles.
