Women's Soccer to Host Virginia Nike Soccer Classic
CHARLOTTESVILLE – The ninth ranked Virginia women’s soccer team returns home this weekend to host the Virginia Nike Soccer Classic at Klckner Stadium. The Cavaliers will play William & Mary and Dartmouth in the tournament, their final two home non-conference games of the season.
Play begins on Friday with Dartmouth meeting Maryland at 4:30 p.m. with the Virginia-William & Mary contest to follow at 7 p.m. On Sunday, Maryland and William & Mary will play at noon, followed by the Virginia-Dartmouth game at 2 p.m.
This year’s tournament is the 21st in-season tournament that the Cavaliers have hosted. Virginia has won its tournament 11 times and been runner-up seven times. Last year, the Cavaliers won the tournament by defeating Colorado and Arizona, both by 4-0 scores. Shannon Foley was named tournament MVP, while Sinead Farrelly, Nikki Krzysik, and Becky Sauerbrunn were named to the All-Tournament team.
The Cavaliers and Tribe meet for the 27th time on Friday, with Virginia holding a 15-9-2 edge in the series. The Cavaliers have won the last three meetings, all by 1-0 scores, including two last season. Virginia won the regular season meeting on Julia Falk’s overtime goal and won a second round NCAA Tournament game on Nikki Krzysik’s goal with 11 seconds to play. The Cavaliers are 8-0-1 vs. William & Mary since 2000, but six of those wins were by one goal, including two in overtime.
Sunday’s game is the third all-time meeting between Virginia and Dartmouth, with the Cavaliers having won both of the previous two meetings. The last meeting came in 2003, a 3-0 Cavalier win at Dartmouth.
