Cavaliers Fare Well in First Day of Bulldog Invitational

ATHENS, Ga — The Virginia women’s tennis team opened the 2008 fall season Friday as play began at the Bulldog Invitational at the Dan Magill Tennis Center. Friday’s action consisted of doubles and the Cavaliers posted a 3-2 record on the day.
In the first round of the day Jennifer Stevens (Miami, Fla.) and Amanda Rales (Bethesda, Md.) topped the team of Berdala and Guereiro of Indiana 8-4. First-years Claire Bartlett (Chattanooga, Tenn.) and Emily Fraser (Rye, N.Y.) won their collegiate debut with a 8-6 win over the team of Ueshima and Ellis of Georgia. Lindsey Hardenbergh (Fairfax Station, Va.) and Neela Vaez (Perrysburg, Ohio) had a first round bye.
In the second round of the day, Stevens and Fraser teamed to top Tuohimaa and Hertzberg of TCU 8-4. Rales and Bartlett lost to Gullickson and Hyndman of Georgia 8-5, while Hardenbergh and Vaez lost to Duncan and Mastromarino of TCU 8-3.
“It was an exciting beginning for us today,” said assistant coach Troy Porco. “Overall, the team did a great job of communicating with each other and sharing information with us as coaches. We look forward to our singles match play tomorrow.”
Singles play begins on Saturday and the tournament runs through Sunday at the Dan Magill Tennis Center.
