Virginia Falls At VCU, 3-1

RICHMOND, Va. Tony Tchani scored the Cavaliers’ goal, a penalty kick in the 39th minute, but the Virginia men’s soccer team fell at VCU, 3-1, Saturday night in Richmond, Va.

“We played hard and we played well,” Virginia head coach George Gelnovatch said. “It was another game where we created fantastic scoring opportunities but failed to convert.”

The game was scoreless in the first half until Virginia earned a penalty kick at the 38:10 mark of the period. Tony Tchani stepped up and converted the penalty kick to give the Cavaliers a 1-0 lead.

Before halftime, VCU evened the score at 1-1 on a goal by Evan Slusser. The Rams extended their lead on a goal by Jorit Loehr in the 76th minute.

With two seconds left in regulation, VCU got an insurance goal from David Rosenbaum.

With the loss, Virginia falls to 2-3-0 on the season, while VCU improves to 2-3-0.

Dan Louisignau earned the start in goal, his fifth straight. In goal for the Rams was Andrew Dykstra and he had eight saves.

Virginia opens ACC play on Friday, Sept. 19 against NC State at Klckner Stadium. Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
