Virginia And No. 4 Maryland Square Off Halloween Night

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. The Virginia men’s soccer team hosts No. 4 Maryland Friday night, Halloween. Kick-off from Klckner Stadium is 7 p.m., and the game will be streamed live over the internet on ACC Select. Live statistics will be available at VirginiaSports.com.
Goodie bags will be distributed to the first 200 children in attendance, and there will be a costume contest for kids. In addition, members of the 1993 NCAA Championship team will be recognized at halftime and will participate in the postgame autograph session.
Virginia (9-5-1, 4-2-0 ACC) is coming off of a 4-2 Tuesday night victory over American. Jonathan Villanueva had a breakout game for the Cavaliers, as he played a part in each of his team’s four goals. The junior midfielder from Grand Prairie, Texas, scored his first two goals of the year and assisted on two others.
Villanueva became the sixth Cavalier to tally multiple goals in 2008, as Tony Tchani leads the team (nine goals), followed by Jimmy Simpson (six goals), Chris Agorsor (four goals), Matt Mitchell (four goals) and Brian Ownby (two goals).
Defensively, Michael Giallombardo has started the Cavaliers’ last 10 games and has allowed seven goals. The junior goalkeeper has posted five shutouts on the year, including three in ACC play. Defenders Shawn Barry and Howard Turk continue to anchor the backfield, although each is just in his first year.
In its last seven games at Klckner Stadium, UVa is unbeaten with six wins and a tie. Maryland (13-3-0, 4-2-0 ACC) is bringing a six-game win streak to Charlottesville as both teams look to take sole possession of second place in the league standings.
Virginia trails the all-time series with Maryland, 26-33-7, and fell 4-1 last season in College Park, Md.
The Terrapins are led by Jeremy Hall (10 goals, four assists), Casey Townsend (10 goals, two assists) and Jason Herrick (four goals, three assists). In goal for Maryland, Zac MacMath has started 10 games and allowed six goals. MacMath has posted five shutouts on the season.
Up next for Virginia is its regular-season finale, a Nov. 7 match against Wake Forest. Kick-off from Klckner Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m.
