CHARLOTTESVILLE The Virginia women’s soccer team had its 2008 season come to an end with a 2-0 loss to Duke in a NCAA Round of 16 game Saturday night at Klckner Stadium. The Cavaliers end their season with a 15-5-3 record, while the Blue Devils (15-5-3) advance to the quarterfinals to meet either UCLA or USC.

“This was a disappointing loss and I feel so bad for our kids,” said head coach Steve Swanson. “This one stings a little bit, losing at home. But credit Duke, they played well and finished their chances.”

The Cavaliers had the better of the chances in the first half and nearly took a 1-0 lead when Meghan Lenczyk’s (McLean, Va.) shot beat the Duke goalkeeper, but a defender cleared it in mid-air just as it was crossing the line. The Blue Devils took advantage of one of their few chances minutes later as Lorraine Quinn’s cross found KayAnne Gummersall in the box, who chipped a one-timer over the keeper and into the net.

In the second half, Virginia continued to pressure and create chances, but it was Duke who was able to capitalize on their one chance. On their only shot of the second half, Elisabeth Redmond gathered a loose ball at the top of the box and fired a shot just inside the post to make the score 2-0 in the 65th minute.

“We had the momentum early on and then they scored against the run of play,” said Swanson. “We did well to keep our composure and continue to pressure them. Then they got a second one on a great finish by Elisabeth. I thought we gave a great effort, but things just didn’t go our way.”

Virginia outshot Duke 15-4, while each team had three corner kicks. Celeste Miles (Garland, Texas) made two saves for Virginia, while Cassidy Powers made three saves for Duke.

“The first goal changed the complexion of the game,” said Duke head coach Robbie Church. “They were sharp early and we got one. It really changed the whole momentum of the game.”
