First-year Whitny Edwards and the 11th-ranked Virginia basketball team hit the road this weekend for a three-game trip to Milwaukee, Wis. Edwards recently sat down with VirginiaSports.com to talk about her transition from high school to college, continuing her career with her twin sister, Britny, why she came to UVa and what she is thankful for.
Question: Are you happy with the win over Colorado?
Edwards: It was a pretty big win for us. Just being able to bounce back from the loss at ODU and get our heads straight and work hard to get the win.
Question: Thanksgiving is this week. What are you thankful for?
Edwards: I am thankful for the opportunities God has given me thus far in my life. Being at this university and being able to play basketball. I am thankful that my family has been able to travel with us and support us.
Question: Are you looking forward to the road trip in Milwaukee?
Edwards: I’m looking forward to it. We have three tough games in three days. It’s going to be great spending Thanksgiving with my teammates and getting to know them more.
Question: How has your transition been from high school to the college level?
Edwards: It was a tough adjustment at first but during preseason all my teammates were great. The veterans helped me learn about Coach Ryan’s system and where I need to be in my spots and everything. I feel pretty comfortable on the team right now.
Question: What do you bring to the team?
Edwards: Shooting and defense and I have been improving my rebounding, so hopefully that will help.
Question: What is like playing with your sister at the Division I level?
Edwards: It’s great. My sister and I are really close and we have been playing together since we started. It’s been great having her here to help me adjust and I have been doing the same.
Question: How did you get started playing basketball?
Edwards: My mom and dad both played and my dad played professionally, so it was sort of by blood. We started playing at a young age then first played on an organized team when we were nine.
Question: What NBA teams did your dad play for?
Edwards: He started with the Vancouver Grizzles, then Utah Jazz, Miami Heat, Boston Celtics and Milwaukee Bucks. We moved around a lot but my favorite place was probably Canada. I was young; I liked the snow.
Question: What has been your career highlight thus far?
Edwards: The win at Tennessee. It was pretty important for us because last season there were a lot of close games. Without a couple of key players, being able to win on the road in a close game was a great thing for us.
Question: Why did you choose to come to UVa?
Edwards: Just the overall balance between basketball and academics. I had heard about Coach Ryan forever. It’s a great program and a great university. Great team, great coaching staff.
Question: What are you thinking about majoring in?
Edwards: I want to go to law school but I am still looking around as far as a major goes. I want to play basketball as long as possible and then try to be a sports agent.
Question: What do you like to do for fun?
Edwards: I am a quiet person. I like to read or watch TV in my room and hang out with my teammates. I read the Twilight series but haven’t seen the movie yet.
