Wrestling Splits Friday Matches at Virginia Duals

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. The Virginia wrestling team split its two matches Friday at the Virginia Duals in Hampton, dropping its opener to Navy, 20-15, before rebounding for a 28-9 triumph over Clarion. Virginia (5-5) next will face No. 24 Kent State at 10 a.m. Saturday.
Matt Bonson (Fr., Lewistown, Pa.), 10th-ranked Chris Henrich (So., Lansdale, Pa.) and 19th-ranked Brent Jones (Jr., Burke, Va.) each scored two wins for the Cavaliers at 133, 174 and 197 pounds, respectively. The three also had a pin apiece.
The Cavaliers started the Navy bout in a 6-0 hole after forfeiting at 125 pounds because of injuries to Ross Gitomer (Jr., Flemington, N.J.) and Joe Trause (Fr., Carlstadt, N.J.). UVa tied the match at six and later got to within two points three times but never was able to get over the hump in the 20-15 loss to the Midshipmen. In the marquee match of the dual, Henrich posted a 4-1 decision over 16th-ranked Luke Rebertus.
Against Clarion, the Cavaliers won six of nine bouts in rolling to the win neither team had a competitor at 125, so it went in the books as a double forfeit. Half of the Cavalier wins came by fall. Bonson pinned Zach Oberlander in 1:52, and Henrich later notched a fall of Scott Joseph in 3:58 as he improved to 22-1 this year. Jones pinned Jamie Luckett in 4:27 at 197 for his team-leading ninth pin of the year. It gives Jones 31 falls for his career, leaving him three shy of Scott Moore’s school record of 34. Jones also pushed his record to 16-4 this season.
