CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. Virginia softball player Nicole Koren has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week, it was announced Monday by the league office.

In Virginia’s 3-1 outing at the Gamecock Invitational, Koren led the Cavaliers at the plate with a .462 batting average during the tournament. A redshirt sophomore, Koren was 6-of-13 on the weekend and had the game-winning RBI in UVa’s 1-0 win over North Florida on Saturday.

She followed that up with a 4-for-4 performance at the plate against Sacred Heart on Sunday, including her fifth home run of the year. She finished the weekend with seven RBI.

The honor is the first career for Koren and she is the first Cavalier to earn the accolade since Kelly Haller on April 2, 2007.

Virginia (9-5) opens the home portion of the 2009 schedule this weekend against George Washington. A doubleheader is slated for a 1 p.m. start Saturday at the newly renovated The Park.
