CHARLOTTESVILLE – Virginia sophomore midfielder Tony Tchani (Norfolk, Va.) has been named one of the 38 members of the Missouri Athletic Club’s Hermann Trophy Watch List. Tchani returns for his second season as the reigning ACC Freshman of the Year and UVa’s leading scorer.
Tchani tallied nine goals and three assists for 21 points in 2008 en route to ACC Freshman of the Year honors. He was also awarded a spot on the All-ACC second team and the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-South Atlantic region first team.
Recently, Tchani was selected a preseason third team All-American by College Soccer News.
Considered the highest individual honor in intercollegiate soccer, the recipients of the MAC’s Hermann Trophy are selected by Division I head coaches who are current members of the NSCAA.
A list of 15 semifinalists will be selected by a coaches committee in November, with three finalists announced in early December. They will be invited to the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis, Mo., for a news conference on Jan. 8, 2010, where the winner will be announced, with a presentation banquet following.
Virginia’s last MAC Hermann Trophy winner was Alecko Eskandarian in 2002.
Men’s soccer begins its home schedule on Friday, Sept. 11, vs. Duke at 8 p.m., following two home exhibitions on Friday, Aug. 21 (George Mason, 7 p.m.) and Saturday, Aug. 29 (West Virginia, 7 p.m.).
