CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia volleyball team held its annual preseason scrimmage Saturday at Memorial Gymnasium. The Orange team defeated the Blue team 4-0. Game scores were 25-22, 25-21, 25-23 and 25-17.

“It’s always great to get an opportunity to have a practical application of our training and give our fans an opportunity to see this year’s team,” head coach Lee Maes said. “We’re excited about our current developments. We’ve been training extremely well and it was really reflective in our play today, by both our blue and orange teams.

“This was also a great opportunity to allow our first-years to step on the court an acclimate themselves to a match environment and have a better understanding and value of every point. Obviously, when you play a match, every point counts.

“It was also a great opportunity today to see Tara Hester, who has made the transition to a full time setter, come out and really take charge of her new role. She did a really nice job in running our offense.

“We’re looking forward to next weekend to be able to play somebody different than ourselves. But more importantly, we’re really happy with where we are in our preparation and development. The next week of practice will focus on refining what we do, from a technical and systemic standpoint, in preparation to opening the season on Friday.”

The Cavaliers open the 2009 campaign at 12:30 p.m. Friday against Northern Iowa at the Texas A&M Invitational in College Station, Texas.
