CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 18 Virginia wrestling team returns to team competition Saturday, traveling to UNC Greensboro and Appalachian State for a pair of dual matches. The Cavaliers wrestle at UNCG at 11 a.m. at Fleming Gymnasium and then will head to Boone, N.C., to take on Appalachian State at 6 p.m. at Varsity Gymnasium.
The Cavaliers (7-1) have not competed as a team since Nov. 28 at the Northeast Duals. UVa won two of its three bouts, defeating Hofstra and Sacred Heart while suffering a defeat to then-No. 10 Central Michigan. The Chippewas have since ascended to No. 6 in the InterMat rankings.
The Cavaliers have three wrestlers in the latest InterMat rankings, with Chris Henrich (Jr., Lansdale, Pa.) posting the Wahoos’ highest ranking at No. 4 at 174 pounds. Brent Jones (Sr., Burke, Va.) is ranked No. 11 at 197, while Danny Gonsor (So., Cleveland, Ohio) is No. 16 at 157.
UVa had several wrestlers compete at the Nittany Lion Open on Dec. 6, with Henrich taking home the championship at 174 pounds. Jones finished second at 197 pounds, while Ross Gitomer (Sr., Flemington, N.J.) nabbed fourth place at 125 pounds and Matt Snyder (R-Fr., Lewistown, Pa.) took sixth at 125. Nick Nelson (Jr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) took seventh at 141 pounds, while Kellon Balum (Sr., Herndon, Pa.) snagged seventh at 149 pounds and Shawn Harris (So., Cleveland, Ohio) placed eighth at 149.
UNC Greensboro has competed in just one dual match this season, suffering a 21-17 loss to Utah Valley on Nov. 19. The Spartans last competed at the Las Vegas Invitational on Dec. 4-5, taking 26th of 42 teams. Andrew Saunders placed seventh at 184 pounds for UNCG. Virginia posted a 27-13 win over UNCG last season in Charlottesville and owns a 4-1 edge in the all-time series.
Appalachian State is 1-5 in dual matches this year after dropping bouts to Ohio University (26-9) and Cleveland State (28-20) Dec. 4. UVa recorded a 34-9 win over the Mountaineers last year in Charlottesville and has a 4-2 lead in the all-time series.
UVa will take a week off for the holidays before returning to competition Dec. 28 and 29 at the Southern Scuffle, hosted by UNCG at the Greensboro Coliseum Special Events Center.
