CHARLOTTESVILLE – Seven former Virginia women’s soccer players are on opening day rosters in Women’s Professional Soccer, as the league will kick off its second season this week. Four former Cavaliers are on the roster of the Washington Freedom and three are on the roster of the Philadelphia Independence.

The Washington Freedom’s roster includes midfielder Sarah Huffman and defenders Becky Sauerbrunn and Alex Singer, all of whom played for Washington last year in the inaugural season of the league. They are joined by midfielder/forward Caitlin Miskel, who was the Freedom’s seventh round selection in this year’s WPS Draft after concluding her collegiate career this past fall.

The expansion Philadelphia Independence selected three former Cavaliers in the expansion draft. The Independence selected defender Nikki Krzysik, who played for Chicago last season, along with midfielder Lori Lindsey and defender Sarah Senty, who both played for Washington last season.

The Cavaliers are tied for fourth among all schools in producing players on this year’s WPS opening day rosters. North Carolina has 17 former players in the league, followed by Notre Dame and Santa Clara with nine each. With seven players, Virginia was tied with Portland, Stanford and UCLA.
