CHARLOTTESVILLE – Virginia’s Varsity Four was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Crew of the Week for the first time this year after defeating fourth-ranked Yale and sixth-ranked Princeton Saturday on Lake Carnegie in Princeton, N.J.

The Varsity Four that competed at Princeton was coxswain Sarah Pichardo, MacKenzie Leahy, Hunter Terry, Ruth Retzinger and Inge Janssen. The Cavaliers posted a time of 7:34.4 to beat out Princeton (7:41.6) and Yale (7:47.2).

It was the Cavaliers’ Varsity Four’s third and fourth defeats of nationally ranked opponents this year. On April 3, the Varsity Four claimed victories over then-No. 10 Michigan and then-No. 12 Ohio State on Lake Monticello.

While the Varsity Four is claiming its first ACC Crew of the Week honor this season, UVa’s Varsity Eight has been selected twice (March 30 and April 6).

Virginia will compete at the 2010 ACC Rowing Championships on Saturday, April 24, on Lake Hartwell in Clemson, S.C. The schedule for the regatta is as follows: Varsity Four at 9 a.m., Novice Eight at 9:20 a.m., Second Varsity Eight at 9:40 a.m. and the Varsity Eight at 10 a.m.
