COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Cody Winiarski (Jr,. Franksville, Wis.) pitched eight innings of one-run baseball and Virginia racked up 14 hits in an 11-2 rout of Maryland Saturday afternoon at Shipley Field. Virginia completed a three-game series sweep and won its 13th straight game in College Park, dating to 2002.

Winiarski (5-0) worked a career-high eight innings, allowing one earned run, five hits and one walk while striking out two. Sander Bock (0-7) allowed five earned runs, six hits and four walks in 5.1 innings in taking the loss. UVa’s starting rotation of Danny Hultzen (So., Bethesda, Md.), Robert Morey (Jr., Virginia Beach, Va.) and Winiarski finished off another strong weekend, with all three working at least seven innings and giving up two runs or fewer.

On a day in which much of the team was dealing with the effects of food poisoning, every UVa starter had at least one hit as the Cavaliers recorded their second ACC series sweep of the year. Virginia racked up five doubles Saturday and finished with 19 doubles and 26 extra-base hits in the series.

Chris Taylor (Fr., Virginia Beach, Va.) posted three hits out of the leadoff spot, while Steven Proscia (So., Suffern, N.Y.) and Kenny Swab (Jr., Kernersville, N.C.) each homered for the Cavaliers (34-9, 15-6 ACC). Proscia finished the series with three home runs with six RBI, while Swab was 7-for-15 in the series with eight runs and six RBI.

Virginia jumped ahead with a run in the second inning. With one out John Hicks (So., Sandy Hook, Va.) singled into left field. He advanced on a wild pitch and then moved to third on a Swab groundout. Hicks scored when Beck uncorked his second wild pitch of the inning.

Proscia continued his torrid hitting in the series in the fifth inning. Taylor led off with a single and one out later, Proscia unloaded on a Beck offering, depositing it well over the fence in left-center field for his third home run of the series and his seventh homer of the year.

Matt Marquis got a run back in the fifth inning when he hit a two-out solo home run for Maryland (15-28, 4-17).

Virginia added three runs in the sixth. Tyler Cannon (Sr., Pigeon Forge, Tenn.) led off with a walk and then stole second. After a groundout advanced Cannon to third, Swab drew a walk. John Dischert entered the game to pitch to Hultzen, who lined a double over the head of left fielder Brandon Padula to score Cannon and move Swab to third. One out later Keith Werman (So., Vienna, Va.) hit an infield single to score Swab and when the throw bounced away from first baseman Dan Gentzler, Hultzen came home as well to give UVa a 6-1 lead.

The Cavaliers batted around and blew the game open in a four-run seventh inning. Dischert got the leadoff out before UVa strung together five straight hits. John Barr (Jr., Ivyland, Pa.) doubled to left and moved to third on a Cannon single. Cannon read a pitch in the dirt from reliever Ian Schwalenberg and took second base before Hicks lined a double to left to score both runners. Swab followed with a towering home run to left center to push the lead to 10-1. The home run was the fourth of the season for Swab.

Virginia added its final run in the eighth inning when pinch hitter David Coleman (Jr., Richmond, Va.) grounded out to score Jarrett Parker (Jr., Stafford, Va.), who had doubled to lead off the inning.

Maryland strung together three singles in the ninth, with Gary Schneider knocking in the Terrapins’ second run with a two-out single.

The Cavaliers return to Davenport Field for a pair of midweek contests next week. UVa will take on No. 8 Coastal Carolina at 5 p.m. Tuesday and Georgetown at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
