Top-Seeded Virginia Advances to NCAA Quarterfinals After 18-4 Triumph

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The top-seeded Virginia Cavaliers (15-1) received three goals apiece from Chris Bocklet, Shamel Bratton and Brian Carroll en route to a 18-4 triumph over the unseeded Mount St. Mary’s Mountaineers (12-5), Saturday evening at Klöckner Stadium in the NCAA First Round.

Carroll’s (Towson, Md.) three goals helped him pass Matt Poskay (88) into second place all-time amongst UVa midfielders. Carroll now has 90 career goals, trailing only Pete Eldredge (94) for the top spot.

Virginia won the team battles in shots (47-30), ground balls (48-31), faceoffs (13-12) and were perfect on clears (22-of-22). UVa was also perfect on clear attempts against Mount St. Mary’s in the season’s first meeting on Feb. 23, going 18-of-18.

UVa started the game on an 8-0 run, which was capped by a goal by Carroll on a pass from Steele Stanwick (Baltimore, Md.), one of the sophomore’s five helpers on the evening.

The Mount ended the streak at 10:22 in the second quarter when Bryan Schmidt scored on a pass from his brother Brett Schmidt, cutting the UVa lead to 8-1.

The Cavaliers scored another eight-straight goals to march out to a 16-1 advantage with 3:25 to play in the third quarter. Colin Briggs (Narragansett, R.I.) capped the streak with a score on a John Haldy (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) pass.

Andrew Scalley scored two-straight goals to cut the Mount’s deficit to 16-3. Connor English (Manhasset, N.Y.) scored unassisted with 8:16 left in the game before Scalley scored one more time to close out the Mount’s scoring at 6:38. Tim Fuchs (Merrick, N.Y.) scored on the open net with 3:22 left after receiving a pass from Nick O’Reilly (Rockville Centre, N.Y.). Fuchs’ score was a result of a one-on-one ground ball situation where O’Reilly beat Mount goalie A.J. Shaufler to the ball. The goal capped the game’s scoring at 18-4.

Stanwick led all players with six points, including matching a career-high with five assists. Haldy added two goals while 11 different Cavaliers scored. Adam Ghitelman (Syosset, N.Y.) picked up a game-high six ground balls in only three quarters between the pipes, allowing two goals and saving nine shots.

Scalley led the Mount with three goals, while Brett Schmidt added two assists. T.C. DiBartolo saved 10 shots and allowed 16 goals in between the pipes, while Shaufler saved two shots and allowed two goals.

Virginia will face eighth seeded Stony Brook on Sunday, May 23 in the quarterfinals in Stony Brook, N.Y. Faceoff will either be at Noon or 2:30 p.m. and will be televised live in HD on ESPNU.
