CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia women’s basketball team will play at Ohio State on Thursday, Dec. 2 in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, the conferences announced Monday (May 24).

The ACC/Big Ten Women’s Basketball Challenge matches 11 teams from each conference in head-to-head competition traditionally on the first Wednesday, Thursday and Friday after Thanksgiving, following the men’s basketball ACC/Big Ten Challenge. The ACC and Big Ten offices determine the 11-game schedule each season, and match-ups may repeat from year-to-year in efforts to coordinate similar opponents and reach competitive equity. Each of the Big Ten’s 11 institutions will participate, while the ACC will select 11 teams from its 12-team membership.

The game will mark the seventh meeting between Virginia and Ohio State. The Buckeyes lead the all-time series 5-1, claiming their last win during the 2002-03 campaign. The Cavaliers’ sole victory over Ohio State came during the 1993-94 season, when UVa defeated the Buckeyes 68-65 in Charlottesville.

Last year, the ACC won seven of the 11 Big Ten/ACC Challenge games. In 2008, the ACC also won seven contests, while the inaugural Challenge in 2007 saw the ACC collect eight victories.

Virginia is among the four ACC squads that remain undefeated in the Challenge, joining Florida State, Georgia Tech and Maryland in that distinction. Michigan remains the only unbeaten team for the Big Ten.

The Cavaliers topped Purdue 56-49 in last year’s Challenge; they prevailed over Illinois in 2008 and Wisconsin in 2007.

Virginia finished the 2009-10 season with a 21-10 overall record and competed in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. Ohio State finished the year with a 31-5 overall record and advanced to the NCAA second round before falling to Mississippi State, 87-67.

Game times, as well as television and broadband coverage, will be announced at a later date. For more information about the ACC/Big Ten Women’s Basketball Challenge, including a complete schedule, log on to www.TheACC.com.
