CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Head coach Mark Bernardino has announced captains for the 2010-11 women’s swimming and diving teams. Leading the squad for the upcoming season will be seniors Katya Bachrouche, Claire Crippen and Liz Shaw.

“Our captains are selected by their teammates because I truly believe that represents a greater honor than being selected by the coaches,” Bernardino said. “On the women’s side, we selected three very dynamic personalities and athletes with very strong work ethics. They care about their team and are honest in relationships with their teammates. The leadership of this team is in good hands.”

Bachrouche, a native of Farmington Hills, Mich., is a two-time all-conference selection. She qualified for her first NCAA Championships as a junior in 2010 and ranks among the top-10 in the Virginia record books in four events: the 500 free (third), 1000 free (sixth), 1650 free (fifth) and 400 IM (sixth).

Crippen, who hails from Conshohocken, Pa., is a two-time ACC champion in the 400 IM and is a three-time NCAA qualifier. The school record holder in the 400 IM, Crippen is a six-time all-conference selection and picked up honorable mention All-America honors in the event in each of her three NCAA meets. She also ranks third in the 200 fly and fifth in the 200 IM in the UVa record books.

Shaw, who served as a team captain as a junior in 2009-10, is an All-American in the 200 fly and honorable mention All-American in the 400 IM. A native of Richmond, Va., she is a six-time ACC champion in addition to being a three-time national qualifier. The 2008 conference freshman of the year, Shaw ranks second in the 200 IM and 200 fly and third in the 100 fly and 400 IM in the record books.

“The most fascinating thing about our women’s team is this entire senior class will share the load,” Bernardino concluded. “They are one of the most close-knit and united classes we have ever had here. Not only will we see great leadership from the three captains, but I believe the entire senior class will step forward and allow our team to enjoy hopefully our greatest year ever.”
