Sargent, Davis and Smart Advance to U.S. Amateur Championship

Charlottesville, VA – Cavalier head men’s golf coach Bowen Sargent will join two of his players at the 2010 U.S. Amateur Championships. Sargent along with seniors Henry Smart and Amory Davis, will represent Virginia at this year’s national championship set for Aug. 23-29 at Chambers Bay in University Place, Wash.

Sargent shot back-to-back rounds of 71 and then won a five-for-one playoff at Birdwood Golf Course Monday to clinch his spot in the field. He sank a 25-foot birdie putt on the second extra hole to win the playoff.

“Unbelievable – unbelievable,” said Sargent, who previously competed in the U.S. Amateur in 1990 at Cherry Hills Country Club (Colo.) and again a year later at The Honors Course (Tenn.). “I didn’t think I could make it 18 holes, much less 38. I didn’t know I had it in me. I feel like I ran a marathon.”

UVa sophomore Cory Siegfried, who recently won the Pennsylvania Amateur, missed the playoff by two shots while former Cavalier Kyle Stough and assistant coach Jay Fisher both shot 146 in the qualifier at Birdwood.

Smart and Davis both advanced to the championship at the sectional qualifier contested in Plymouth, Pa. Davis finished second at 141 while Smart won a playoff for the sixth spot at 143.
