CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia women’s soccer team concluded its 2010 preseason schedule Sunday night with a 1-1 draw with James Madison at Klöckner Stadium. The game was played in 105 minutes with a 45-minute period followed by two 30-minute periods.

The teams played a scoreless first period, with the Cavaliers outshooting the Dukes 10-4. Just over a minute into the second period, James Madison took the lead. Megan Fessler took a free kick from near midfield that threaded through all of the players in the box and just crossed the line to make the score 1-0. The Cavaliers answered in the 60th minute when Kika Toulouse (Arlington, Va.) set up a breakaway chance that was converted by Gloria Douglas (Fayetteville, N.C.). In the final period, Virginia outshot JMU 9-2, but couldn’t find a game-winner.

Overall, Virginia outshot James Madison 21-8 and had an 8-3 corner kick advantage. Chantel Jones (Midlothian, Va.) made three saves in goal for Virginia over the first two periods, while Danielle DeLisle (Baltimore, Md.) played the final 30 minutes. Diane Wszalek made four saves for JMU in the first 87 minutes, while Kate Courter made five saves in the final 18 minutes.

“Give JMU a lot of credit, they played hard tonight,” said head coach Steve Swanson. “I don’t think we handled their pressure as well as we could and we certainly didn’t move the ball as well as we are capable of. That is why you have these exhibitions, in order to learn about your team. On Friday (against Notre Dame), we did a lot of things well. Tonight, we learned there is a lot of things we still need to work on. We are ready for a good week of training to get ready for the opener on Friday.”

The regular season opens on Friday, August 20 when the Cavaliers host Liberty at Klöckner Stadium at 7 p.m.
