CHARLOTTESVILLE — The Virginia men’s tennis team began its 2010 fall schedule Friday as play began at the UVa Fall Classic at the Snyder Tennis Center. Five Cavalier singles players and one doubles team advanced on the opening day of the tournament.

In the blue singles, Santiago Villegas (Bogota, Colombia) reached the quarterfinals with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Will Rollinson of NC State. Two Cavaliers advanced in the orange singles draw, with Justin Shane (Falls Church, Va.) winning his collegiate debut 6-2, 6-3 over Erik Hannah of George Washington and Philippe Oudshoorn (Apeldoorn, The Netherlands) winning 6-1, 6-1 over Nobu Tanaka of Longwood. In white singles, Steven Eelkman Rooda (Amersfoort, The Netherlands) won his first round match, 6-3, 6-3, over Elon’s Cameron Silverman. Brian Fang (Hacienda Heights, Calif.) won his first match in the black draw, topping Bastian Bornkessel of Binghamton 7-6, 6-7, 6-3.

In doubles, the team of Rooda and Oudshoorn reached the semifinals of the orange draw with an 8-4 win over Alexandre Haggai and Arnav Jain of Binghamton.
