CHARLOTTESVILLE – The No. 6 Virginia women’s soccer team remained unbeaten in 2010 with a 4-0 win over Texas Friday night in Virginia Nike Soccer Classic, before 1,476 fans at Klöckner Stadium. The Cavaliers (5-0-1) found the back of the net four times in the second half to hand the Longhorns (4-1-1) their first defeat of the season.

“Overall, it was a good result for us,” said Virginia head coach Steve Swanson. “I thought we were a little impatient in the first half. Our decisions weren’t good enough. We responded well in the second half and got some great goals.”

The teams played a scoreless first half with the Cavaliers having a slight edge in shots, 4-2. Virginia wasted little time in the second half to take the lead. In the 51st minute, Sinead Farrelly (Havertown, Pa.) received a pass from Lauren Alwine (Elizabethtown, Pa.) and cut back a shot inside the near post for her fourth goal of the season. Caroline Miller (Rockville, Md.) doubled the advantage less than five minutes later as she curled a shot from the top of the box inside the far post for her second tally of the year. Julia Roberts (Frederick, Md.) notched her second goal of the season in the 76th minute as she tapped in a rebound of a saved shot by Gloria Douglas (Fayetteville, Md.). Kate Norbo (Roanoke, Va.) closed out the scoring nine seconds before the final whistle, as she was scored her first goal of the year off a long pass from Molly Menchel (Alexandria, Va.).

“Once you score that first goal, you get some confidence and you settle into the game,” said Swanson. “We got some tremendous contributions from our bench tonight and our depth was once again a big factor for our team.”

Overall, Virginia outshot Texas 17-3 and had a 5-2 corner kick advantage. Chantel Jones (Midlothian, Va.) made one save for the Cavaliers, posting her fourth shutout of the season and the 27th of her career. Alexa Gaul made seven saves for the Longhorns.

In the first game of the day at Klöckner Stadium, Boston University defeated William & Mary 3-1. The Cavaliers meet the Terriers in the final game of the Virginia Nike Soccer Classic on Sunday at 2 p.m. Texas and William & Mary open Sunday’s play at noon.
