CHARLOTTESVILLE – The No. 6 Virginia women’s soccer team captured the Virginia Nike Soccer Classic title for the fourth consecutive year, topping Boston University 3-0 Sunday afternoon at Klöckner Stadium. The Cavaliers scored three goals in the second half, two by tournament MVP Sinead Farrelly (Havertown, Pa.), and remained unbeaten on the season (6-0-1). The Terriers fell to 3-5-0 on the year, with each loss coming to a ranked opponent.

“Give BU a lot of credit; they have played tough schedule and were very organized against us today,” said Virginia head coach Steve Swanson. “In both games of this tournament, we were able to use our depth and wear down our opponent in the second half. We took advantage of some chances in the second half, but we are going to need to improve our starts as we approach the start of the ACC schedule.”

For the second consecutive game, the Cavaliers found themselves in a scoreless draw at the half. Just like they did two days earlier against Texas, they responded with a pair of early goals in the second half. In the 56th minute, Amanda Fancher (The Colony, Texas) played a ball to Farrelly, who cut inside the box, had her initial shot saved, but tapped in the rebound to give Virginia the lead. Two minutes later, Meghan Lenczyk (McLean, Va.) sent a ball wide to Caroline Miller (Rockville, Md.), who dribbled into the box and fired a shot just inside the far post for her third goal of the year. Farrelly closed out the scoring in the 73rd minute with her second goal of the game and sixth of the season. Kate Norbo (Roanoke, Va.) headed a clearance attempt behind the defense into the run of Farrelly, who slipped a ball inside the far post.

“It was a good weekend overall for us, as we got a pair of results against quality opposition,” said Swanson. “The team is coming along, but as with any team at this point in the season, there are still some things that need improving.”

Overall, Virginia outshot Boston University 23-6 and had a 7-2 corner kick advantage. Chantel Jones (Midlothian, Va.) made three save for the Cavaliers, posting her fifth shutout of the season and the 28th of her career. Alice Binns made three saves in the first half for the Terriers and Kelly King made one save in the second half.

Joining Farrelly on the All-Tournament team for the Cavaliers were Miller, Jones and Morgan Stith (Montclair, N.J.).

The Cavaliers conclude the non-conference portion of their schedule next Sunday, Sept. 19, as they visit West Virginia. Game time at the Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in Morgantown is set for 1 p.m.
