Virginia Head Coach Mike London
“I’m proud of our guys and their effort. To come here, travel and play and go toe-to-toe with these guys is great. We had a turnover in the red zone and had chances to score. We missed two field goals. Could have, should have, would have.
“It was a tremendous effort by the guys in the locker. No one gave us a chance. We played a good game but we need to get some things in order.”
(On the penalized fake punt)
“I was told they blew the call (after halftime), by the guy who made the call and the referee. It’s a shame, a crying shame. It happens some times in games. You get good calls and calls go against you.”
(On QB Marc Verica)
“He could have made some better decisions but the ones he made and how he drove the team, it showed the maturity of a player who has been in games. He made some ill-advised throws but directed the team well and made good throws. I’m proud of his efforts.
“Our defense played excellent. They were running around, played some bump coverage and they threw deep a couple times. We tried to put pressure on Barkley and their ground game. The coaches did a great job to come up with a game plan to take it into the fourth quarter.
Virginia QB Marc Verica
(On his interception in the end zone)
“I knew it was a stupid play. I know exactly what I have to do on every single play. You can’t let one play rattle you. It was a costly decision but you have to put it behind you.”
“We sent a message tonight. It’s a new team and we are not who we used to be. We can play with anyone. It hurts a lot but we definitely had our chance.”
