EASTON, Pa. – The third-ranked Virginia field hockey team improved to 7-0 on the season with a 4-0 victory over Lafayette (2-4) in Easton, Pa. Junior Paige Selenski scored twice while Elly Buckley and Michelle Vittese also scored for UVa.

For the contest, Virginia outshot the Leopards 9-4, and took six penalty corners to four for Lafayette.

Neither team was able to score in the first half, with the Cavaliers holding a slight 4-3 edge in shots. But Virginia came out strong to start the second half, scoring just four minutes into the half, when Selenski (Shavertown, Pa.) outpaced the defense on a breakaway goal.

Then in the 50th minute, Buckley (Perth, Australia), on an pass from Selenski, made it 2-0 in favor of UVa. Vittese (Cherry Hill, N.J.) followed with a goal in the 53rd minute to make it 3-0; Buckley was credited with the assist.

Selenski capped the Virginia scoring with a goal in the 61st minute after deflecting in a shot from Tara Puffenberger (Dallas, Pa.). Selenski leads the squad with 11 goals this season.

For the Virginia defense, it marked the fourth shutout of the season. Senior Kim Kastuk (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) acquired two saves. Teammate Adrienne Ostroff (Blue Bell, Pa.) came on to play the final 11 minutes. Freshman Chloe Pendlebury (Perth, Australia) also recorded a defensive save in the first half.

Virginia opens Atlantic Coast Conference play Friday at Boston College. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
