Cavaliers Win ACC Opener 3-0 at Virginia Tech

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The No. 7 Virginia women’s soccer team opened ACC play Thursday night with a 3-0 victory at in-state rival Virginia Tech. Gloria Douglas (Fayetteville, N.C.) had a goal and an assist to lead the Cavaliers, who improved to 7-1-1 overall and 1-0-0 in the conference. The Hokies fell to 6-4-0 overall and 0-0-1 in the ACC.
“Anytime you can go on the road in the ACC and get a 3-0 win, you are obviously pleased,” said Virginia head coach Steve Swanson. “After a little shaky start, we settled down and played very well in the second half. We showed a lot of grit and played some very nice soccer tonight. There are a lot of positives to take from this game, especially after the disappointment at West Virginia.”
For the first time in four games, the Cavaliers scored a first half goal as they took the lead in the 32nd minute. Colleen Flanagan’s (Downingtown, Pa.) pass over the top of the defense sent Douglas in on a breakaway. Douglas tucked her shot just inside the far post for her second goal of the year.
Virginia doubled its advantage in the 65th minute. One-touch passing from Douglas and Meghan Lenczyk (McLean, Va.) set up a breakaway for Sinead Farrelly (Havertown, Pa.), who slipped a shot past the keeper for her seventh goal of the season. Lauren Alwine (Elizabethtown, Pa.) closed out the scoring in the 81st minute, intercepting a pass in the box and poking in her third goal of the season.
“We had a lot of contributions tonight,” said Swanson. “We had a lot of great performances off the bench in this game. We have talked a lot about our depth all year, but they did a great job tonight and really made a difference.”
Overall, Virginia outshot Virginia Tech 18-9 and had a 5-4 corner kick advantage. Chantel Jones (Midlothian, Va.) made three save for the Cavaliers, posting her sixth shutout of the season. Dayle Colpitts made eight saves for the Hokies.
The Cavaliers have a week off before returning to action on Sept. 30 when they visit No. 6 Maryland. Game time in College Park is set for 7 p.m.
