Chapel Hill, NC – The ninth-ranked Virginia women’s golf team finished fourth at the 18-team Tar Heel Invitational Sunday in Chapel Hill, N.C. Virginia shot 5-under 283 for a final score of 2-under 862. The Cavaliers’ 18-hole score was the best in the program’s history, topping the mark of 284 set on three other occasions. Alabama cruised to the team title at 836 while LSU was second at 848 and Duke was third at 851.

Virginia was led by the top-10 finishes of Brittany Altomare and Calle Nielson. Altomare shot 1-over 73 Sunday and placed sixth overall at 6-under 210. Her score bettered her previous best tournament total by two shots. It was the sixth top-10 finish in the sophomore’s career.

Nielson equaled her own UVa single-round scoring record by posting a 5-under 67 during the final round to finish 10th at 211. She notched the 16th top-10 finish in her career.

Freshmen Portland Rosen, playing in her first collegiate event, shot 3-under 69 during the final round to place 21st at 1-under 215. Lauren Greenlief was 61st at 226 and Nicole Agnello was 66th at 227.

Alabama’s Brooke Pancake won a two-hole playoff against LSU’s Megan McChrystal to take home medalist honors at 11-under 205. Pancake and McChrystal’s scores broke the tournament scoring mark by one stroke. Alabama’s three-day total of 28-under 836 was 14 shots better than the previous tournament team scoring mark.

The Cavaliers wrap up the fall portion of their season Oct. 22-23 when they play at the Landfall Tradition in Wilmington, N.C.
