CHARLOTTESVILLE-Virginia red-shirt junior guard Sammy Zeglinski (Philadelphia, Pa./The William Penn Charter School) will undergo an operation on his left knee on Tuesday (Oct. 19). The operation will involve cartilage work and the duration of Zeglinski’s rehabilitation will be determined after the surgery.

Zeglinski injured the knee during a workout in early October.

“I feel for Sammy,” said Virginia head coach Tony Bennett. “He has worked hard to get ready for this season and he’s an integral part of our team. I know he’ll work hard and be diligent about his rehabilitation.

“Sammy is one of our more experienced players and our other guards will need to step up in his absence.”

The 6-1 Zeglinski has led the Cavaliers in three-point field goals made, assists and steals each of the last two seasons. Last season he played in all 31 of the Cavaliers’ games, starting 29, and averaged 8.9 points and 3.8 rebounds a game. Zeglinski led the team with 61 three-point field goals made, 80 assists and 38 steals. He has started 44 games the last two seasons.

Zeglinski missed 25 games during the 2007-08 season, including the last 24 games, with an ankle injury. A medical hardship waiver request was approved for Zeglinski in the summer of 2008.
