No. 3 Virginia Defeats Tribe 3-0

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The third-ranked Virginia field hockey team (12-2) defeated William & Mary 3-0 Monday at the University Hall Turf Field. Junior Paige Selenski recorded two goals and assisted on the third, while the Cavalier defense recorded its sixth shutout of the season.

For the game, UVa outshot the Tribe 21-1 and took a season-high 17 penalty corners. The defensive unit did not allow a William & Mary penalty corner.

“It was a total team effort,” Virginia head coach Michele Madison said. “The team came ready to play and we were firing on all cylinders. Our defense gave us many scoring opportunities against and well-coached and determined team.”

The Cavaliers got on the board in the 16th minute when freshman Hadley Bell (Shaker Heights, Ohio) found Selenski in front of the cage as she put it past W&M’s Elizabeth Frey for a 1-0 advantage.

Just before the half, Selenski (Shavertown, Pa.) struck again. This time, she stole the ball near midfield and drove to her left, pulled up and fired to the right post. The Cavaliers led 2-0 at the break.

The third UVa goal came in the 48th minute when Selenski dribbled down the right side and crossed the ball over to teammate Elly Buckley (Perth, Australia), who recorded her ninth goal of the year.

William & Mary fell to 3-12 on the year. Frey finished with eight saves in the cage.

Three Cavalier goalkeepers – Kim Kastuk, Adrienne Ostroff and Amanda Crider – all saw action against the Tribe.

Virginia concludes its home portion of the regular season with two games this weekend. The Cavaliers play host to No. 13 Wake Forest at 1 p.m. Saturday and Radford at 1 p.m. Sunday at the University Hall Turf Field.
