TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The No. 7 Virginia women’s soccer team opened a two-game road trip to the Sunshine State with a 0-0 draw at No. 10 Florida State on Thursday night. The Cavaliers, unbeaten in their last three, move to 10-3-2 overall and 4-2-1 in the ACC. The Seminoles go to 11-3-1 and 5-1-1 in the conference.

“It was a chess match out there tonight, a very tactical game,” said Virginia head coach Steve Swanson. “It was a good effort from our team and there were a lot of positives. Defensively, we did a good job of containing them and limiting their chances, but they did the same to us. In the end, it was a fair result.”

The Cavaliers and Seminoles had few chances over the first 45 minutes and went to intermission tied. It marked the seventh time in 15 games this season that Virginia went to halftime in a scoreless draw. Both teams had more chances in the second half but both goalkeepers came up big. FSU keeper Kelsey Wys made a point blank save on Gloria Douglas (Fayetteville, N.C.) in the 59th minute after a Seminole giveaway. Eight minutes later, Julia Roberts’ (Frederick, Md.) blast from the top of the box hit the post. In the 85th minute, Chantel Jones (Midlothian, Va.) made key saves on Amanda DaCosta and Breezy Hupp.

Jones made six saves on the night and posted her 31st career shutout, tying the school record set by Christina de Vries (2003-06). It also moves her into a tie with de Vries for fifth on the ACC career shutout chart.

“Chantel would be the first to tell you that the record is a reflection of the team she has had in front of her,” said Swanson. “She has been superb for us and tonight was no different. The fact that she reached this record in her third season shows the caliber of keeper she is.”

Overall, Florida State had a 10-9 edge in shots, while both teams had two corner kicks.

The Cavaliers will continue its Florida road trip on Sunday as they visit Miami. Game time in Coral Gables is 1 p.m.
