BOSTON, Mass. – The reigning NCAA Champion Virginia rowing team began fall competition on Sunday (Oct. 24) when it raced at the Head of the Charles regatta in Boston, Mass. Virginia’s two entries in the Championship Eights race finished second and eighth and the Cavalier Championship Fours finished fifth and 17th.

Virginia’s second-place Championship Eights finisher was second to only Princeton (15:48.314) and beat out Brown (15:58.062) and Yale (15:58.467) with a time of 15:56.817. UVa’s eighth-place Championship Eights finisher had a time of 16:21.977. There were 30 entries into the race.

“Princeton rowed a very, very good race to win,” UVa head coach Kevin Sauer said. “Overall, we are pretty pleased and it was a good day.”

In the Championship Fours, Virginia finished fifth (18:06.839) and 17th (19:44.667) in the 20-team race.

“It was a strong first day of racing for our team,” associate head coach Steve Pritzker said. “For how early in the fall we are, it’s a promising start.”

Virginia’s Alumni Eight won its race on Saturday (Oct. 24) by more than 30 seconds over second-place Yale Alumni.

Virginia is back in action at the Princeton Chase on Sunday, Oct. 31.
