NORFOLK, Va. – The Virginia doubles team of Maria Fuccillo and Rashmi Teltumbde won the ITA Atlantic Regional championship as play concluded Monday at Old Dominion University. With the title, the first regional title in Virginia history, the duo qualifies for the ITA National Indoor Championships, held next month in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.

Ninth-seeded Fuccillo and Teltumbde posted a pair of upsets Monday to capture the title. In the semifinals, they defeated top-seeded teammates Emily Fraser and Hana Tomljanovic 9-7. In the final, they defeated third-seeded Michaela Kissel and Dominika Zapazna of Marshall 8-6.

“I am extremely proud of Rashmi and Maria,” said head coach Mark Guilbeau. “This was the first time they have ever played as a pair and to come out on top is impressive. Their determination and fight throughout the tournament was tremendous and the championship is a deserving honor for them.”

The ITA National Indoor Championships will be held Nov. 4-7 at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. The field includes 32 singles players and 16 doubles teams for both the men and women.
