CLEMSON, S.C. – The No. 7 Virginia women’s soccer team concluded its regular season with a 6-0 win at Clemson Sunday at Historic Riggs Field. With the win, the Cavaliers (13-3-2, 7-2-1 ACC) post seven conference wins and 13 regular season wins for the first time since 2005. The Tigers conclude their season at 6-13-0 (0-10-0 ACC).

“It is always difficult to get wins on the road in the ACC so we are happy with this result,” said Virginia head coach Steve Swanson. “We had a number of players play well today and we also were able to rest some players which hopefully will be helpful heading into next week.”

The Cavaliers took the early advantage with three goals in a three-minute span to take a 3-0 lead just 17 minutes into the game. Sinead Farrelly (Havertown, Pa.) opened the scoring in the 14th minute as she tapped in a cross from Lauren Alwine (Elizabethtown, Pa.). Farrelly struck again a minute-and-a-half later as she scored on a breakaway set up by Erica Hollenberg (Fairfax Station, Va.). It was Farrelly’s 10th goal of the season, setting a new career high. A minute later Hollenberg made the score 3-0 as she knocked in a loose ball in the area after an Alwine cross. It was Hollenberg’s third goal of the season as she scored for the third consecutive game.

In the second half, the Cavaliers extended their lead to 4-0 in the 69th minute as Shasta Fisher (Saugus, Calif.) scored her first career goal on an assist from Molly Menchel (Alexandria, Va.). In the 74th minute, Gloria Douglas (Fayetteville, N.C.) took a ball in the midfield, dribbled to the top of the box and fired a shot inside the far post for her fifth goal of the season. Katie Starsia (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) closed out the scoring as she tallied her first career goal in the 80th minute when her shot off an Amber Fry (Northfield, Ill.) corner kick hit the bottom of the crossbar and bounced down over the line.

Overall, Virginia had a 30-5 edge in shots and a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks. Chantel Jones (Midlothian, Va.) made two saves in net for the Cavaliers before making way for Danielle DeLisle (Baltimore, Md.) to come in and complete Virginia’s 10th shutout of the season. Lauren Arnold and Marci Elpers made six and one saves respectively for the Tigers.

Virginia travels to Cary, N.C. next week for the ACC Tournament at the WakeMed Soccer Park. Play begins Wednesday and the third-seeded Cavaliers will meet sixth-seeded Boston College in the quarterfinals. Game times for the tournament will be announced Monday.
