CHARLOTTESVILLE – The 10th-ranked Virginia men’s soccer team defeated Campbell, 4-1, on Tuesday night (Nov. 2) at Klöckner Stadium. Will Bates (Chester, Va.) led the Cavaliers with two goals and an assist.

With the victory, Virginia extended its unbeaten streak against non-conference opponents to 21 matches. UVa’s overall record is 10-3-3 and 2-3-2 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. Campbell’s record went to 6-8-4 overall.

Prior to the match, T.J. Cyrus (Virginia Beach, Va.), Greg Monaco (Virginia Beach, Va.), Diego Restrepo (West Palm Beach, Fla.), Jimmy Simpson (Warrenton, Va.) and Mike Volk (Bear, Del.) were honored as part of Senior Night.

“We came out with energy and enthusiasm tonight,” UVa head coach George Gelnovatch said. “I thought we did a good job of moving the ball and defensively getting around the ball. We anticipate playing a lot of games in the next week and a half, so it was good to get a couple of guys some rest.”

Rookie Brian Span (Somers, N.Y.) scored the first goal for the Cavaliers in the 17th minute. After Brian Ownby (Glen Allen, Va.) had dribbled into the Campbell defense, the ball deflected off of a Camel defender and Span possessed the ball 30 yards away from the goal. At that point, Span curled a high shot into the upper-right corner of the net and past the diving hands of Camel goalkeeper Ethan Hall.

It was Span’s fifth goal of the season.

The next two Cavalier goals belonged to Bates, as he one-timed Ownby’s cross from five yards out in the 21st minute and then headed a flicked-on ball into the upper-right corner of the net in the 35th minute. Bates now leads Virginia with eight goals in 2010.

Freshman Bryan Lima (Boca Raton, Fla.) had Virginia’s final goal of the night, the first of his career, in the 47th minute. Lima put away a cross from Bates from eight yards out.

Campbell got on the board in the 80th minute when Justin Franz was open in front of the goal and scored his third goal of the season off of an assist from Eduardo Rodriguez.

Virginia out-shot the Camels, 8-7. Restrepo finished with four saves in goal for Virginia, while Hall had two in defeat for Campbell.

Up next is the regular-season finale for Virginia. The ‘Hoos travel to NC State on Saturday (Nov. 6) for a 7 p.m. match.
