Cavaliers Fall to Boston College 1-0 in ACC Quarterfinals

CARY, N.C. – The No. 5 Virginia women’s soccer team was eliminated by Boston College in the ACC quarterfinals for the second consecutive year, falling to the No. 18 Eagles 1-0 Wednesday night at WakeMed Soccer Park. The Cavaliers fall to 13-4-2 on the season, while the Eagles improve to 13-5-1.

“We expected it to be a close game and it was,” said Virginia head coach Steve Swanson. “This had the feel of a quarterfinal or semifinal NCAA Tournament game. We are disappointed with the result. Our effort was good, but the difference was they finished their one chance and we didn’t capitalize on ours.”

The teams played a scoreless first half with neither side creating many chances. It was the eighth time this season Virginia has headed to halftime at 0-0. In the second half, the Eagles took advantage of their only shot on goal of the game, as Maddie Payne scored her first goal of the season in the 66th minute off an assist from Julia Bouchelle.

Overall, each team had 11 shots in the contest, while Boston College had a 4-2 edge in corner kicks. Chantel Jones (Midlothian, Va.) took the loss in net for the Cavaliers, while Jillian Mastroianni made four saves to record the win for the Eagles.

The Cavaliers will learn their NCAA Tournament draw when the field of 64 is announced on Monday. The announcement will come at 4:30 p.m. on ESPNU.
