CHARLOTTESVILLE — Virginia senior Michael Shabaz advanced to the quarterfinals of the Virginia National Bank Tennis Chanpionships during Wednesday’s play at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. He won his fifth match of the tournament (three in qualifying, two in the main draw) to advance at the event, a stop on the ATP Challenger Tour.

Shabaz defeated Ryan Harrison in the second round 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. Ranked No. 176 in the world, the 18-year-old Harrison is one of the rising stars of American tennis. He meets fifth-seeded Kei Nishikori of Japan, who topped Virginia alumnus Teddy Angelinos 6-4, 6-2 on Wednesday, in the quarterfinals on Friday.

Also on Wednesday, former Cavalier All-Americans Somdev Devvarman and Treat Huey won their first round doubles match, topping Alex Bogomolov and Alex Kuznetsov 6-3, 7-5.

Thursday’s schedule features Devvarman’s second round singles match, as he plays Greg Jones of Australia.

Tickets for the tournament are $10 daily for Boar’s Head Sports Club members and $15 daily for non-members.
