CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia women’s soccer team advanced to the round of 32 of the 2010 NCAA Tournament with a 3-0 win over Lehigh in the first round Friday night at Klöckner Stadium. The Cavaliers scored three goals in a 10-minute span of the second half to record the win to improve to 14-4-2 overall. Lehigh, the Patriot League champions making its first NCAA appearance, ends its season at 11-5-4.

“We certainly weren’t as sharp as we would like to be,” said Virginia head coach Steve Swanson. “We were in control for most of the game, but our decisions and our execution caused us not to be able to create a lot of chances. It was good to get a game under our belt and we will be ready to get back at it on Sunday.”

The teams played a scoreless first half with neither side creating many chances. It was the ninth time this season Virginia has headed to halftime at 0-0. In the second half, the Cavaliers took the lead in the 67th minute as Maggie Kistner (St. Louis, Mo.) headed in a Lauren Alwine (Elizabethtown, Pa.) corner kick for her first goal of the season. Two minutes later, Amanda Fancher’s (The Colony, Texas) cross was headed in by Gloria Douglas (Fayetteville, N.C.) for her sixth goal of the season. In the 77th minute, Julia Roberts (Frederick, Md.) closed out the scoring as she tapped in a cross from Emily Carrollo (Sussex, N.J.).

Overall, Virginia outshot Lehigh 20-3 and had an 8-1 edge in corner kicks. Chantel Jones (Midlothian, Va.) made two saves for the Cavaliers to post her ninth shutout of the season. It was also her 32nd career shutout, giving her sole possession of the Virginia school record. Lauren Mains made five saves for the Mountain Hawks.

The Cavaliers will meet either South Carolina or UNC Greensboro in the second round on Sunday. Game time at Klöckner Stadium is 2 p.m.
