CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia women’s basketball team cruised to a 81-58 win over Mount St. Mary’s Sunday (Nov. 14) in its first home game of the 2010-11 season at John Paul Jones Arena. For the second game in a row, it was a Cavalier post player leading the way with a double-double as junior forward Chelsea Shine (Wayne, Pa.) paced UVa with 17 points and a career-high 15 rebounds.

With the win, Virginia improved to 2-0. It was the season-opener for Mount St. Mary’s (0-1).

Shine was 7-for-15 from the field and 10 of her rebounds were on the offensive glass. She also chipped in three steals. It was her second-career double-double.

Four other Cavaliers joined Shine as double-digit scorers. Junior Ariana Moorer (Woodbridge, Va.) and freshman Kelsey Wolfe (Germantown, Md.) had 12 points apiece, while junior Whitny Edwards (Charlotte, N.C.) and sophomore Telia McCall (Marietta, Ga.) each had 10.

With the game tied at 11 with 13:19 left in the first half, the Cavaliers went on a 13-0 run, capped off by a jumper by Shine to take a 24-11 lead with 7:46 left in the period. The Cavaliers extended their lead to 37-17 at halftime, and Mount St. Mary’s did not cut the lead to less than 17 points for the rest of the contest.

The Cavaliers out-rebounded The Mount, 49-32.

Mount St. Mary’s was led by Sydney Henderson with 17 points and Ashley Christie with 13 points.

Virginia improved to 7-0 all-time against The Mount.

Up next, Virginia hits the road for a non-conference game at No. 4 Tennessee on Thursday (Nov. 18). Tip-off at Thompson-Boling Arena is scheduled for 7 p.m., and the game will be televised by SportSouth.
