Sophomore Meredith Cavalier and the Virginia women’s swimming and diving team heads to Athens, Ga., for the Georgia Invitational this weekend. Competition begins Friday with preliminaries at 9:30 a.m., with Auburn, Georgia, Kansas, Minnesota, Penn State and UVa all slating to compete. Cavalier, a native of Stafford, Va., recently sat down with VirginiaSports.com to talk about the upcoming meet, her first collegiate win and her TV show recommendations.

Question: What do you take from the meet against Penn State and Indiana?
Cavalier:
We did really well as a team last weekend. We stepped up where we needed to and swam fast when we were tired, which is what we train to do as a team.

Question: What are you doing as a team leading up to the Georgia Invitational?
Cavalier:
We are going to keep working hard. I really want to swim a personal-best in 200 backstroke because I haven’t tapered that in a long time.

Question: How far have you come from where you were a year ago at this time?
Cavalier:
Last year I wasn’t good at training. This year I have been training a lot faster and swimming faster at duel meets. That was one of my goals from last year.

Question: What was it like for you to get your first collegiate win in the 100 back against Virginia Tech and Princeton?
Cavalier:
That was pretty awesome for me; I have been waiting for that. I had a couple of chances last year to maybe win a race and end up getting second or third. It was a lot to get off my chest.

Question: Why did you come to UVa?
Cavalier:
I came to Virginia because how close the team is and I really got the feeling I could become best friends with the team just from my recruiting trip. I didn’t get that feeling from any of my other trips.

Question: Have you declared a major yet?
Cavalier:
I think I am going to major in American Politics. I took a politics last semester and really enjoyed it.

Question: Do you have a dream job?
Cavalier:
I would love to work for the Baltimore Orioles.

Question: What do you like to do for fun?
Cavalier:
I love watching movies and TV shows. My goal for Christmas break is to watch every movie that won the Academy Award for Best Picture.

Question: Do you any TV shows you would recommend?
Cavalier:
Dexter, Entourage, and Modern Family.
