Cavaliers Outlast Richmond, 75-62
CHARLOTTESVILLE – Virginia outlasted in-state foe Richmond, 75-62, Monday night in women’s basketball action at John Paul Jones Arena. Junior guard Ariana Moorer (Woodbridge, Va.) led the Cavaliers with 18 points, including eight in the final four minutes of the game to help seal the win for UVa.
With the victory, Virginia improved to 10-5 overall and an unbeaten 8-0 at John Paul Jones Arena this season. Richmond’s record went to 9-5 on the season.
Junior guard Whitny Edwards (Charlotte, N.C.) added 14 points and four rebounds for Virginia, while sophomore center Simone Egwu (Odenton, Md.) barely missed a double-double with 11 points and nine boards. Junior Chelsea Shine (Wayne, Pa.) scored in double figures for the seventh-consecutive game – netting 10 – while grabbing seven rebounds.
In the first half, Virginia earned a 26-19 lead after a burst of six-consecutive baskets capped off by a lay-up by Shine with 7:52 left in the period.
Richmond responded with a 5-0 mini-run of its own, to pull within a field goal, 26-24, with 5:35 left.
From there, Virginia closed out the half by out-scoring the Spiders, 9-5, and took a 35-29 halftime lead.
UVa extended its lead to as many as 18 points in the second half of the second half, but Richmond rallied behind back-to-back 3-pointers from Brittani Shells’ to cut the lead to two, 60-58, with 5:41 left in the game.
A 3-pointer by Edwards on the ensuing Cavalier offensive possession ignited the JPJA crowd of 2,791 and extended UVa’s lead to 63-58 with 5:18 left. The Cavaliers ended the game on a 12-4 run to win by a 75-62 margin.
Virginia improved to 12-3 in the all-time series with Richmond and won its second-consecutive contest vs. the Spiders.
Shells finished as Richmond’s high scorer with 22 points, followed by Abby Oliver with 15 points and four assists.
The Cavaliers begin ACC play on Thursday (Jan. 6) with a 7 p.m. game vs. Miami at John Paul Jones Arena.
