CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia women’s tennis team will open its 2011 spring schedule this weekend as it hosts the sixth annual UVa Winter Invitational Saturday-Monday at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. The No. 24-ranked Cavaliers are joined in this year’s event by No. 22 Arkansas, No. 40 Utah and No. 68 LSU. The event is the Cavaliers’ final individual tournament before the dual match season begins the next week.

Each day will feature one round of doubles play and one round of singles play. Action begins on Saturday and Sunday at 10 a.m. and on Monday at 9 a.m. Admission is free.

Virginia has a school-record five players nationally ranked in singles. The Cavaliers are tied with Duke, Florida, Notre Dame and Stanford for the most players currently ranked. Three Cavalier sophomores each received their first career singles ranking, with Erin Vierra (Norwell, Mass.) at No. 29, Hana Tomljanovic (Boca Raton, Fla.) at No. 73 and Maria Fuccillo (Rockville, Md.) at No. 111. Juniors Lindsey Hardenbergh (Fairfax Station, Va.) at No. 56 and Emily Fraser (Rye, N.Y.) at No. 88 round out the group of five ranked Cavaliers. In doubles, the Cavaliers have two of the top 16 teams in the rankings. The team of Fraser and Tomljanovic are No. 10, while Fuccillo and Rashmi Teltumbde (Mumbai, India) are No. 16.

A total of nine ranked singles players are scheduled to compete in this weekend’s event. No. 26 Anouk Tigu of Arkansas, No. 33 Whitney Wolf of LSU, and No. 60 Evgenia Kryuchkova and No. 82 Anastasia Putilina of Utah will join the five ranked Cavaliers.

Virginia begins the dual match season on Jan. 22 when it hosts a doubleheader at the Boyd Tinsley Courts. At 11 a.m., the Cavaliers open the season against No. 62 Brown, followed at 4 p.m. with a match against Richmond.
