CHARLOTTESVILLE – The top-ranked Virginia men’s tennis team opened the 2011 season Tuesday night with a 12-1 win over No. 75 William & Mary at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. The match used an alternative scoring system agreed upon by both coaches. The match had eight singles matches and five doubles matches, all worth one point for a total of 13 points. Virginia won all eight singles matches in straight sets and the top four doubles matches to post the 12-1 victory.

In doubles, the Cavaliers won at each of the top four positions. The reigning NCAA doubles champions, Michael Shabaz (Fairfax, Va.) and Drew Courtney (Clifton, Va.) remained unbeaten in 2010-11 with their win at No. 1. Alex Domijan (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) and Jarmere Jenkins (College Park, Ga.) won at No. 2, Sanam Singh (Chandigarh, India) and Steven Eelkman Rooda (Amersfoort, The Netherlands) won at No. 3, and the team of Julen Uriguen (Guatemala City, Guatemala) and Justin Shane (Falls Church, Va.) won at No. 4.

In singles, Virginia swept all eight matches without losing a set, winning five sets by a 6-0 score. Singh led the way, completing his perfect day with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3. First-years Domijan and Shane were victorious in their first career dual match singles matches. Shabaz, Jenkins, Courtney, Uriguen and Philippe Oudshoorn (Apeldoorn, The Netherlands) also won for the Cavaliers.

The win extended Virginia’s school-record home win streak to 75 consecutive matches.
