Women's Tennis Opens Season with Pair of Shutout Wins

CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia women’s tennis team opened its dual match season with a pair of 7-0 wins during a Saturday doubleheader at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. The Cavaliers topped No. 62 Brown in the morning before defeating Richmond in the afternoon.

Against Brown (0-1), the Cavaliers took a 1-0 lead by sweeping all three doubles matches. Tenth-ranked Emily Fraser (Rye, N.Y.) and Hana Tomljanovic (Boca Raton, Fla.) won at No. 1, 16th-ranked Maria Fuccillo (Rockville, Md.) and Rashmi Teltumbde (Mumbai, India) won at No. 2 and Lindsey Hardenbergh (Fairfax Station, Va.) and Erin Vierra (Norwell, Mass.) won at No. 3.

In singles, the Cavaliers clinched the dual match as three players won in straight sets; Fuccillo at No. 5, Tomljanovic at No. 4 and Fraser at No. 1. Hardenbergh added a win at No. 2, Vierra won at No. 3 and Caryssa Peretz (Cherry Hill, N.J.) won at No. 6 in three sets to complete the shutout.

In the Richmond match, the teams of Fraser/Tomljanovic, Fuccillo/Teltumbde and Hardenbergh/Vierra all won their second matches of the day to sweep the doubles.

Against the Spiders (0-1) in singles, the Cavaliers won all six matches in straight sets, losing just a total of 13 games in the process. Hardenbergh, Tomljanovic, Fuccillo and Peretz all posted their second win of the day, while first-years Teltumbde and Marjorie Baker (Washington, D.C.) earned their first career dual match wins.

Virginia will return to action on Jan. 29 when they visit Wake Forest in a non-conference match. Match time in Winston-Salem is noon.
