CHARLOTTESVILLE – The top-ranked Virginia men’s tennis team advanced to the 2011 ITA National Team Indoor Championships with a 7-0 win over No. 51 East Tennessee State Saturday night at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. The win gave the Cavaliers the title of the ITA Kickoff Weekend tournament as they improved to 6-0 overall. The Buccaneers fell to 1-3 on the season.

In doubles, the Cavaliers took the opening point with wins at the top two positions. Alex Domijan (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) and Jarmere Jenkins (College Park, Ga.) gave UVa the early edge with an 8-5 win over Sander Gille and Jesus Bandres at No. 2. The opening point was clinched at No. 1 by Drew Courtney (Clifton, Va.) and Michael Shabaz (Fairfax, Va.), who topped Charles Bottoni and Grega Teraz 8-3.

In singles, Virginia increased its lead to 2-0 as Domijan cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 win over Bandres at No. 2. Sanam Singh (Chandigarh, India) pushed the lead to 3-0 with his 6-4, 6-1 win over Teraz at No. 3. Julen Uriguen (Guatemala City, Guatemala) clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Jorge Varon at the No. 6 position. Courtney added a 6-4, 6-4 won over Juan Ramirez at No. 5 and Jenkins topped Bottoni 7-5, 6-4 at No. 4 to push the lead to 6-0. Shabaz completed the singles sweep with a three-set win over Gille at the No. 1 spot.

The win puts Virginia into the field of 16 for the 2011 ITA National Team Indoor Championships, held Feb. 17-20 in Seattle. The Cavaliers will be looking for their unprecedented fourth consecutive title.

Virginia continues its homestand on Friday, Feb. 4 when it hosts Maryland in the ACC opener at 5 p.m.
