CHARLOTTESVILLE – Virginia junior tennis player Lindsey Hardenbergh (Fairfax Station, Va.) was named the ACC Women’s Tennis Player of the Week, conference officials announced Tuesday. Hardenbergh helped the Cavaliers post a 2-1 record last week at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships, with wins over No. 3 Baylor and No. 20 Northwestern.

In the first round of the tournament, Hardenbergh clinched the victory over No. 3 Baylor, the highest ranked opponent Virginia has ever beaten. With the dual match tied at 3-3, she rallied from down 5-1 in the final set to top No. 30 Diana Nakic 6-3, 5-7, 7-6(6) to give the Cavaliers the 4-3 win. The next day, she topped No. 48 Ellah Nze of Duke in straight sets as Virginia fell in the quarterfinals. In the 4-0 consolation win over Northwestern on Sunday, Hardenbergh teamed with Erin Vierra (Norwell, Mass.) to clinch the doubles point with an 8-6 win at No. 2 over No. 58 Maria Mosolova and Belinda Niu.

The award is the second of Hardenbergh’s career and the second for a Cavalier this season. Hardenbergh received her first career player of the week award last season and Emily Fraser (Rye, N.Y.) earned Virginia’s first honor of the season last week.

The Cavaliers (8-1), who are expected to have the highest ranking in school history when the new team rankings are released this week, will travel to Montgomery, Ala., this week for the 2011 Blue/Gray Tennis Classic. That tournament runs Friday-Sunday.
