CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia softball team (12-9) dropped a doubleheader with Longwood (12-3) Tuesday in its home opener at The Park. The Lancers claimed the first game 2-1 in a come-from-behind effort and won the second game, 10-8.

In the final game of the day, freshman Stephanie Harris hit her first career home run in the bottom of the seventh inning, a three-run shot to left, to bring the Cavaliers within two runs. She had two hits in game two against the Lancers.

Longwood outhit Virginia 11-9 in the second game and put up three runs in both the fourth and fifth innings.

The Cavaliers were led at the plate by Giannina Cipolloni and Alex Skinkis, who joined Harris with two hits.

Erica Cipolloni took the loss in the first game. She threw the first three innings and gave up five runs on six hits. Stephanie Coates tossed the final four innings and allowed five runs on five hits.

Longwood’s Briana Wells picked up her second win of the day with another complete game outing. She finished with three strikeouts in game two.

Virginia led 1-0 in game one against the Lancers until the sixth inning, when Longwood put together a string of four hits to take a 2-1 advantage. The Cavaliers were outhit 4-3 for the contest and left nine runners on base.

In the seventh, leadoff hitters Taylor Williams and Giannina Cipolloni both recorded infield singles, but Williams was left on third and Cipolloni, the would-be winning run, was stranded at second to end the game.

Erica Cipolloni recorded UVa’s other hit and scored the team’s only run. After singling up the middle to start the fourth, Alex Skinkis bunted Cipolloni over to second. Then with two outs, Cipolloni had a delayed steal to third and an overthrow on the play allowed her to come home to score.

Sophomore Melanie Mitchell (7-7) took the loss in the circle. She threw a complete game and allowed the two earned runs on four hits. She also finished with eight strikeouts and did not allow a walk.

Wells earned the win for Longwood; she recorded four strikeouts.

Virginia continues its homestand this weekend when it hosts the UVa Invitational. The Cavaliers will play five games in three days beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday against Princeton.
