CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia softball team (14-14, 0-2 ACC) opened Atlantic Coast Conference play Saturday by dropping a doubleheader to Boston College (6-15, 2-0 ACC) at The Park. The Eagles won the first game 9-3 and took the second 11-3.

In game one, BC outhit Virginia 12-6 and used two big innings – a four-run third and a three-run sixth – to go out in front of the Cavaliers.

Sophomore pitcher Melanie Mitchell got the start and threw the first six innings, allowing seven earned runs on 12 hits. Junior Stephanie Coates tossed the final inning, did not allow a hit and recorded two strikeouts.

Leading Virginia at the place was freshman Stephanie Harris, who recorded two singles, while junior Giannina Cipolloni had a hit and a RBI.

Virginia also fell in the second game, 11-3, a contest in which five different pitchers saw action.

The Cavaliers were again outhit at the plate, 10-5. Cipolloni recorded a hit and a RBI in the contest and Harris recorded two hits, one of which was a double, and a RBI. Senior Cynthia Javaras also tallied a RBI single.

Virginia and Boston College conclude the series at 12 p.m. Sunday at The Park.
