Cavaliers Top Wake Forest 6-1 in Home Finale

CHARLOTTESVILLE – The No. 18 Virginia women’s tennis team concluded its regular season home schedule Saturday with a 6-1 win over No. 52 Wake Forest at the Snyder Tennis Center. The Cavaliers improve to 16-6 overall and 5-4 in the ACC, while the Demon Deacons fall to 6-12 overall and 0-9 in the ACC.
Virginia opened the match by rallying to win the doubles point. The team of Maria Fuccillo (Rockville, Md.) and Caryssa Peretz (Cherry Hill, N.J.) gave UVa the early edge with an 8-3 win at No. 3 over Ryann Cutillo and Anna Mydlowska. Wake Forest drew even as Kayla Duncan and Kathryn Talbert topped Emily Fraser (Rye, N.Y.) and Hana Tomljanovic (Boca Raton, Fla.) 8-2 at No. 1. The opening point came down to the match at No. 2, where Lindsey Hardenbergh (Fairfax Station, Va.) and Erin Vierra (Norwell, Mass.) rallied from down three breaks at 5-0 to win 8-6 over Martina Pavelec and Emilee Malvehy.
In singles the Cavaliers doubled their advantage as Hardenbergh topped Talbert 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2. After Fuccillo downed Mydlowska 7-5, 6-1 at No. 6, Fraser clinched the win with a 7-6(5), 6-0 win over Pavelec at the top position. Peretz added a 6-1, 7-6(6) at No. 5 to make the score 5-0 before Wake picked up its only point of the day at No. 3 where Malvehy won a pair of tiebreakers to edge Tomljanovic. Vierra closed out the match with a third-set match-tiebreaker victory over Duncan at No. 4.
The Cavaliers will conclude the regular season with a pair of road matches next week. They visit No. 11 Clemson on Saturday and No. 12 Georgia Tech on Sunday.
