Cavaliers Head to Duke For 2011 ACC Championships

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia track and field team will head to Durham, N.C., this week for the 2011 Atlantic Coast Conference Championships. Events are set to take place at Duke’s Wallace Wade Stadium Thursday-Saturday, April 21-23.

The ACC will provide a free live webcast of events on Friday and Saturday, beginning at 4 p.m., while live results will also be available each day. Links to both can be found at VirginiaSports.com.

Heading into the championships, eight Cavaliers are ranked among the top three of their respective events in the ACC this year.

On the women’s side, redshirt senior Stephanie Garcia, an All-American in the steeplechase, leads the nation with her time of 9:56.96 from the Mason Spring Invitational. Junior All-American Morgane Gay, who ran 4:21.75 in the 1500m at George Mason, ranks third in the ACC, while junior Erin Wykoff sits second in the discus, throwing 163′ 4″ at the Spec Towns National Team Invitational.

On the men’s side, five Cavaliers rank in the top-3 of the ACC. Senior All-American Adams Abdulrazaaq, sophomore All-American Robby Andrews and freshman Chris Foley all rank second in events on the track. Abdulrazaaq ran 13.89 in the 100mH at the Spec Towns Invitational, while Andrews ran 1:49.59 in the 800m at the Mason Spring Invitational. Foley posted a time of 30:25.14 in the 10k at the Colonial Relays.

In men’s field events, junior Andy Fahringer holds the top spot in the javelin with his throw of 239′ 7″ from the Raleigh Relays. Junior Vincenzo Chiariello rounds out the Cavaliers who are ranked, sitting third in the hammer with a throw of 198′ 11″ from the Liberty Collegiate Invitational.

Following the conference meet, the Cavaliers head to Philadelphia, Pa., for the prestigious Penn Relays.
